ABOUT ME

BIOGRAPHY

was born in and already during my elementary school years, I was fascinated by the trumpet as an instrument, and so, at the age of 10, I began trumpet lessons. I am very grateful to my first teachers for introducing me to various musical styles early on. This diversity continues to influence me to this day. During my school years, I was part of various ensembles, including the big band at our high school. Later, the American jazz trumpeter Gary Barone became my teacher. With him, I learned jazz and improvisation systematically for the first time. In the final years of my school education, I occasionally played in up to five big bands in the Freiburg area. This support fueled my passion for jazz, and after graduating from high school, I decided to turn my passion into a profession.

In 2007, I began studying at the University of Music, Jazz Department, in Basel under Matthieu Michel. This education in Basel forms the foundation of my current work as a professional musician in every respect. During this time, I was not only given the opportunity to develop my musicality but also met many of the musicians with whom I play today. In addition to many other top-class instructors, Bert Joris (Swiss Jazz School Bern) and Adrian Mears were my  teachers. In 2008 and 2009, I was selected for the "DKSJ All-Star Project" and participated in the tours under the direction of Alexander von Schlippenbach (2008) and Guillermo Klein (2009). These projects, playing in various big bands, and the lessons in arranging with Lars Lindvall, Guillermo Klein, and Bert Joris gave me the ability to create and perform my own big band pieces.

TEACHING

In addition to my work as a musician, I also work as an instrumental teacher for trumpet, improvisation, composition, and music theory. I am part of the musischool faculty at the jazzcampus in Basel.f interested: Email jonas-w@gmx.de or through the contact section of my website.
